I was a UX Designer on Google Dialer, which is the default phone app on all Pixel, Nexus, Android One and other devices. The app has seen exponential growth in the past years.

As a part of the Communication Suite, we aimed to connect people and businesses everywhere, enabling deeper human expression, and helping to get things done. We enabled people and businesses to communicate on every Android device across messaging, voice and video with Duo, Dialer and Messages.

LIVE CAPTIONS

466 million people around the world are deaf or hard-of-hearing (HoH). How can we help people make and receive calls without having to speak or hear?

UX Goal: Make sure live captions follow users throughout their journey on Android and that it’s optimized for calls on Dialer

UX constraint #1: Live captions must not get in the way of dialer users/UI? (for example, Live caption cannot cover the 6 button sheet)

UX constraint #2: Make sure that we show enough of the transcribed conversation to users so it not challenging to follow.

CALL RECORDING

Call Recording is one of the most requested Dialer feature. Google Dialer users want to be able to record calls when dealing with businesses and other individuals where proof of the call details may be useful in the future.

GOALS:

Provide a native Call Recording experience that supports Dialer running on Android P or later.
Provide native storage and export of call recordings to other Google services.
Provide intelligent features such as call transcriptions, for users to make the best use of the call recordings they make.
Ensure call recording works correctly with other Dialer features.
Enforce legal and privacy regulation compliance across all geographies Dialer operates across.
